This is my grandmother's recipe. My family pulled it out of the archives a while ago, and now we make it frequently. We make the burgers mini (a little larger than slider size) because otherwise they fall apart. We fry up the burgers in a pan and then like to throw them into a crockpot with the sauce. Also, you can put the sauce over meatballs you purchase from the store. (Boil the meatballs before adding them to the sauce).
Hamburger patties:
1 1/2 lbs. hamburger
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
3/4 cup dried bread crumbs
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 Tbs. chopped onion
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Form into 12 - 14 patties. Brown in hot fat in a skillet. Set into barbeque sauce and simmer 30 - 60 minutes. (This is the right time if you simmer them on the stovetop. If you simmer them in a crock pot, it will take longer before the meat is cooked through).
Barbeque sauce:
3 Tbs. vinegar
1 cup catsup
1/2 cup water
2 Tbs. sugar
6 Tbs. chopped onion
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1 bay leaf
Combine all ingredients and simmer 5 minutes. Remove the bay leaf. Pour barbeque sauce over the patties and cook as noted above.
Serve on buns with a spoonful of sauce on each bun.
